The media and communications landscape moves quickly and given the cultural climate of 2020, planning your brand’s PR strategy for next year may seem like a challenge. Despite the unknowns we face in 2021, here are a few basic tips to help in planning your PR strategy next year.

  1. Think big picture. It’s important to determine how you want to position your brand holistically in front of your target audience. Ask yourself; what conversations do you want to be a part of in the coming year, what value do you have to offer, and in what ways do you want to inspire your consumers and build community? Answering these questions will help you determine big picture goals that will help guide your PR strategy as a whole.
  2. Look long-term. A brand isn’t built overnight. While short-term tactics can create quick spikes in brand awareness, we see the most success when brands focus on building trust over time. Focusing long-term allows you to build quality relationships with media and influencers that leads to credibility and lasting brand loyalty.
  3. Leverage something new. Brands are in a sweet spot for media and influencer coverage when they have something new, exciting and interesting to offer. Do you have a new product or service that you’re planning to release? Are there any brands on your wish list to collaborate with? Leverage new offerings and collaborations to create opportunities to speak about your brand and keep you top-of-mind for coverage.
  4. Listen and stay nimble. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that change is the only constant. Keep a detailed pulse on current events and what your consumer’s evolving needs are, and build flexibility into your PR strategy in case you need to pivot. What matters most is that you’re able to meet your audience where they are and provide value in a timely manner.
  5. Engage your PR team early. The most successful campaigns result when PR is involved at the beginning of the strategic planning process. When developing strategy, your PR team can integrate vital brand awareness tactics that amplify marketing and sales efforts. Don’t have a budget for a PR team? We recommend investing in a few PR consulting sessions to help frame your strategy early on.
