Detoxify After the Holidays with Downward Dog

If you’re like most people in America, you probably spent last weekend eating as much turkey, stuffing and mashed potato leftovers as your body could handle. Now it’s the week after Thanksgiving and you’re feeling a bit sluggish. Unlike some mammals, we don’t get to hibernate after we eat that much – we have to continue on with our work week and forge ahead!

Many yogis and health nuts alike agree that a detox after the holidays is a great way to get your mind and body back on track and feeling healthy. This doesn’t mean cutting out all the yummy foods you like to enjoy; it could mean doing a couple extra hours at the gym, or maybe trying yoga or some extra fruits and veggies.

Yoga is a great way to detoxify because the positions typically stretch and twist your muscles and organs in a good way! For example, Downward-Facing Dog allows for your heart to be higher than your head – this reverses the natural pull of gravity and helps the circulation of blood in your body. It’s also an easy way to tone up your abs, which naturally stimulates your digestion.

Another position that aids in digestion is Marichyasana. The twisting in this position stimulates your digestive tract by massaging your abdominal organs. Make sure to always take full, strong inhales and exhales during yoga, especially during positions that rotate your torso! The twisting motion in yoga positions helps to eliminate toxins in your organs.

Last but not least, an enjoyable and restorative pose called Viparita Karani is known to ease muscle fatigue, calm your nervous system (the holiday stress is over!), and help to restore your natural breath. With your legs and hips either propped up by your hands, or your legs resting on the wall, this pose is said to alleviate weakened immunity and ease exhaustion.

If you can’t make it to a yoga class, you can help your body cleanse its system by snacking on some of these natural detoxifiers: Grapefruit, Cucumber, Cauliflower, Sunflower Seeds, and Broccoli. These foods are rich in vitamins and fiber that help lower cholesterol and help with digestion. As always, WATER is your number one go-to for an easy and fast cleanse. Keep a reusable water bottle handy and make sure you are drinking from it all day long. This is the best way to flush toxins from your system quickly!

Namaste!
